Emergency Relief

Christmas is a time of joy and celebration with family and friends, delicious treats and gifts under the tree. For thousands of Queensland families and individuals facing homelessness and isolation, this Christmas will be tough, with little to celebrate. With the cost of living increasing so many families are struggling to meet life’s basic demands. For those families, a special Christmas meal with toys to unwrap will be nearly impossible.

By donating the cost of a virtual Red Bag, your support can change that.

At Wesley Mission Queensland, we create an environment of dignity and respect for people struggling to meet life’s demands.  With a goal of getting individuals and families back on track to stability and independence, our services are tailored to provide life’s basic necessities of food and accommodation, as well as financial assistance and mental health support.

Wesley Mission Queensland's Emergency Relief Hub operates five days a week and provides a range of support options for people in need. This may include food, accommodation, counselling and referrals and workshops. Our Emergency Relief Hub has been operating since 1985 and is one of the last remaining of its kind in Brisbane.

Serious struggle has many different faces; our Emergency Relief Hub sees women affected by domestic violence, families struggling to pay the mortgage, and people living with loneliness, isolation, mental illness and drug and alcohol problems. Add to this the current lack of affordable housing in Queensland, which is a huge crisis. There are rapidly rising rates of men and women with dependent children who have suffered a job loss, a divorce or significant trauma.

What can start with a simple offer of food can lead to a conversation about further support. It's this connection that makes the difference.

Every week our Emergency Relief Hub requires thousands of dollars worth of food to meet the needs of people who don't know where their next meal is coming from. At Christmas time the need grows exponentially. During December we will supply over 1,000 Red Bags to people in need, helping them make Christmas special.

Give the gift of hope and spread Christmas cheer to so many this festive season. Help be the difference. Donate to the Red Bag Appeal today.

Colin's Story

Looking into the eyes of his hopeful children as they asked him what they would be having for Christmas was almost too much to bare for Colin.

The dedicated father, whose children have special needs, had only been able to pick up part time work here and there around his main duties as their carer, and there was no money in the budget for a special Christmas meal, let alone presents and toys.

“Christmas was a particularly difficult time. Just all the uncertainty for the children, them not knowing what they were going to have for Christmas. Not knowing if there was even actually going to be a Christmas. And having to say to the kids, I’m sorry, but I don’t know what we’re going to be able to do…"

That’s when Colin reached out to the Brisbane Relief Hub for help and found out about the Red Bag Appeal.

“Receiving the support from Wesley and seeing the difference on the kid’s faces at Christmas time, knowing that they are actually going to have a Christmas. Knowing they are going to be having toys, having food; knowing they are going to be able to have a normal Christmas, like a lot of other families. It just really warms your spirit knowing that the kids are going to be looked after.

“If it wasn’t for the Red Bag Appeal, our family and quite a number of other families would not have enjoyed Christmas the way that we did.”
