Meet Jacqueline, Josh and Grace.

Almost 10 years ago, Jacqueline, Josh and Grace first came to Wesley Kids in need of support to work through some family trauma. Since then, whenever the family has needed it, Wesley Kids has been there.

Wesley Kids has provided much-needed support through the grief and loss program, buddy sessions, and family therapy.

Jacqueline knows first-hand the positive impact Wesley Kids can have on young children and families, and just how vital the service is. “To have a service that looks after children, but is also trained in the family side of things and can help the parents, is just priceless. There is no other way I can say it except – we would not be sitting here on the couch today talking to you, if we hadn’t received the support we have received from Wesley Kids through the years.

“We can’t tell you how grateful we are. Thank you.”

You can watch their full story below.

Wesley Kids needs your support to build a sensory playground to help children work through their trauma with play-based therapy.

We know from research that outdoor playgrounds are a fun and important part of every child’s healthy physical development. For children who have experienced trauma or abuse, play is also a vital part of their therapeutic treatment and recovery. Play therapy provides rich opportunities for children to release emotions and share their feelings when it may be too difficult to articulate them into words.

Playground equipment like slides, ramps, balancing beams and tunnels give children an opportunity to develop their motor skills, problem-solving capacity and balance as they interact and construct awareness of the world around them. It builds their confidence as they face new challenges and learn new skills

Sensory panels provide a range of activities that help children to activate their seven senses - touch, movement, smell, taste, sight, hearing, and balance. The goals of a sensory playground are to help sooth anxiety, build cognitive ability, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

We want to create a bright and interactive play area that sparks a sense of wonder for children, that inspires their imagination and brings them joy. With your support, we can do that.

Thank you for helping us provide healing and support for vulnerable and hurting children.

- Alissa Miller, Wesley Kids Program Manager

Play-based therapy gives children experiencing grief and trauma a better chance to reach a happy, healthy childhood.

Will you give them that chance?

Approximately 1 in 7 children experience a mental health disorder in Australia. That statistic might shock you, but it is all too real. Mental health problems in childhood can have a huge impact on wellbeing. In addition, there is strong evidence that mental disorders in childhood and adolescence predict mental illness in adulthood.

But here is where we can make a difference: childhood presents the greatest opportunity for intervention. We know that investing in prevention and early intervention gives children the best opportunity for good mental health and wellbeing. For high risk groups, such as children affected by violence, abuse, maltreatment or poverty, early intervention can help reduce disparities between their mental health and the mental health of children in psychologically healthy environments.

Wesley Kids supports children experiencing grief and/or trauma, helping them and their families to work through these experiences with one-on-one and group counselling, play-based therapy, family therapy, grief and loss groups, and parenting programs. Our warm and welcoming environment creates a safe space for children, who are often dealing with the loss of a parent, sibling or grandparent, instances of domestic violence, grave (or terminal) illnesses within the family, and more.
