In Memory of Leo Hunter Bezear

I'm fundraising for a great cause! Will you join me?

I am proudly raising funds for Hummingbird House, Queensland's only children's hospice, and a truly special organisation that provides support for families loving and caring for a baby, child or young person with a life-limiting condition.

By joining me in supporting Hummingbird House, you’re letting these families know that we care, and they are not alone.

Families lives are taken up by the 24/7 responsibilities of caring for their baby, child or young person living with a life-limiting condition.  Our support also means that they can access essential services like family support, a range of therapies, short respite breaks wherever they live in Queensland.

Together, let’s help them make every moment precious when time is short

Thank you for your generosity and for getting behind this wonderful cause.

How we became a Hummingbird House Family

Wednesday 28th Jun
We first came into contact with Hummingbird House after the devastating loss of our son, Leo.

Leo was born very premature at only 26 weeks gestation, on Friday 30 September 2022. He was admitted to the NICU immediately but showed promising signs of strength in the first week of life.

Unfortunately, when Leo was 8 days old, he became unwell and his health very quickly declined. Within the day he was on maximum life support and by 10 pm we were having end-of-life conversations. We managed a couple of hours of sleep at the hospital, praying for a miracle and his condition to turn around.
But Leo’s condition didn’t change, and our worst nightmare unfolded on the morning of Sunday 9 October.

The first time we held our little boy was also the last day he was alive. The doctors facilitated time for our family to say goodbye, before allowing the three of us time to be together during his final hours of life.

The hospital spoke to us about Hummingbird House, and an opportunity to receive after-death care and support. We had never heard of the house but were encouraged to say yes to the opportunity if we thought we might like to spend more time with Leo. The hospital looked after us for another night and organised everything with Hummingbird House.

The next day Hummingbird House picked us up from the hospital and transported us to the house in Chermside. We were given time to settle into a family apartment, before meeting our care team and being delivered a hot lunch. (the hot lunch is an important part of the story, we’ll come back to that in another post)

Under the worst possible circumstances, we became a family of Hummingbird House, but being looked after by a team of some of the most respectful and caring individuals allowed us the time and space to just be grieving parents. This level of support and generosity doesn't have a price tag and I don't think anything we do will ever feel enough in repayment for the care we received as a family. One day we hope to raise enough money to cover our stay, and some, to pay it forward for other families that will (un)fortunately experience a stay at the house.
