In loving memory of Zayden
Aged 4 ½ years
Our time at Hummingbird House was a lifeline, letting us catch our breath and regain the energy we needed to take care of Zayden.
Adele, Zayden’s mum
A rare genetic condition caused Zayden huge amounts of pain, illness, and uncontrollable seizures. After spending much of his short life in and out of hospital, Hummingbird House became the place where his loving, but exhausted, family could all stay with him to recharge, where they felt understood and could experience how joy and sorrow could co-exist.
In loving memory of Zahra
Aged 3 months
Part of our decision (to go to Hummingbird House) was that Zahra hadn’t been outside, we wanted to take her outside, to let her pass away under the big tree.
Erin, Zahra’s mum
Little fighter Zahra was born at 24 weeks, weighing only 315 grams. She survived for nearly 3 months before dying in her family’s arms in Hummingbird House’s beautiful garden. Zahra’s family loved the caring Hummingbird House staff, soul warming meals and memories made in the playground. Hummingbird House continued caring for Zahra’s family with grief and bereavement support, art therapy and a special place to come back to.
In loving memory of Rosie
Aged 3 years
Rosie’s fun-loving spirit shone at Hummingbird House. We are forever grateful they were there to help us celebrate, care for and grieve Rosie.
Viv, Rosie’s mum
Rosie was a vibrant, book-loving, swing-riding, cheeky 3-year-old who was diagnosed with an aggressive childhood cancer. Her loving family relocated from Warwick to Brisbane for treatment. After being in hospital for several months, Rosie loved the freedom of riding the little bike around the Hummingbird House halls and backyard. Rosie’s family couldn’t have had the meaningful and well-supported palliative care, end of life or grief journey without Hummingbird House.
Meet Olive
Aged 10 years
Hummingbird House allows us to include Olive’s brothers in a way they feel safe and relaxed and just lets them be siblings.
Mandy, Olive’s mum
Olive’s beautiful smile hides the challenges she has faced every day since going into heart failure at 8 months. A heart transplant saved her life, but she also lives with unrelated severe epilepsy and other complications. Hummingbird House allows Olive and her family to feel supported to take part in activities and events they would not normally be able to do. It’s a place where the entire family can spend precious time together in a way that feels relaxed and safe.
