About Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice, supporting families through the heartbreak of caring for a child who isn’t expected to reach adulthood. With over 5,700 families facing this reality across the state, we provide free, specialised care when time is short and memories matter most — giving families real choice over how and where they receive support.

This care is only possible thanks to community donations.

Maxi’s Story

Aged 2 ½ years

Hummingbird house is a safe place that cares for Maxi and looks after him with the same level of love and care that we provide.

– Maxi's Mum Catherine.

While a life-limiting brain malformation prevents Maxi from walking, talking and feeding independently, he loves creating artworks during his respite stays at Hummingbird House. More than just art, these pieces are special memories his family will treasure forever. Hummingbird House allows Maxi’s parents to rest and recharge, knowing he will receive the same level of care and love they provide.

Chesea-Dee’s Story

Aged 6 years

At Hummingbird House we try to make the most of life and spend time together as a family. Chelsea loves playing in the pool, making art and walks in the park.

– Chelsea-Dee’s Mum Taleah.

Chelsea-Dee’s condition can cause sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), a fear her family faces every day. The support offered at Hummingbird House provides a break from lengthy hospital stays and gives 9 year old sister Amelia the chance to spend quality time with her parents. Chelsea-Dee’s cheeky smile is a constant during her time at the House, especially when splashing in the hydrotherapy pool or in the purpose-built garden.

Asher’s Story

Aged 17 years

Hummingbird House has become a lifeline for our family. We cannot express the love and importance of such a space for families like ours.

– Asher’s Mum Allie.

Asher and his older brother Elijah were babies when they were diagnosed with a rare genetic condition diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, MeCP2 Duplication Syndrome, that causes neurological, intellectual, and physical complexities. While Elijah sadly passed at 21 months old, Asher, now 17, has defied expectations, and the impact of multiple complex conditions associated with his diagnosis. Asher’s family says Hummingbird House is a ‘lifeline’, a place to breathe where the love and care is ‘life changing’.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Spread the love, share this page.

A lot of my work is done outside of the house, connecting with families in their homes or in the hospital as well. The compassion and kindness amongst the staff is always something that's mentioned.
